The Global Innovation Index ranks Switzerland the most innovative country in the world.
The Global Innovation Index ranks countries using over 80 indicators, including R&D expenditures.
Sweden and the United States rank second and third.

Other countries, however, are rapidly catching up. Korea, China, and Japan lead the rest of the world for number of patents produced by their citizens.
China is ranked #1 for its R&D spending.
